Restoring Trust and Supporting Law Enforcement in Pursuit of Justice
The Retired Investigators Guild (RIG) is dedicated to restoring faith in law enforcement while relentlessly pursuing justice for the victims of violent crime. We provide immediate, 24/7 expert assistance to local law enforcement agencies across the United States, offering critical support wherever and whenever it's needed most. While our primary focus is on solving cold case homicides, our skilled investigators also assist with active investigations, provide mentorship, coaching, and training to newly assigned detectives, and contribute to overall capacity-building within law enforcement.
Who We Are
The Retired Investigators Guild is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization made up of retired and former criminal investigators from local, county, state, and federal agencies across the country. Our volunteers are selected through a rigorous process based on their distinguished careers in major case investigations. Each RIG investigator has demonstrated unparalleled expertise in solving homicides, cold cases, and other major crimes. They undergo thorough background checks, including a security clearance-level review, ensuring that every member meets the highest standards of integrity and professionalism.
How the RIG Will Help
Law enforcement agencies nationwide are facing an unprecedented crisis. In recent years, political and social pressures have resulted in significant cuts to police budgets and personnel, weakening the ability of law enforcement to maintain public safety. Agencies are struggling with severe staffing shortages, as many experienced officers have retired early or left the profession due to demoralizing conditions.
As crime rates rise and resources shrink, local departments—particularly in smaller towns and rural counties—are overwhelmed and ill-equipped to handle major investigations. The Retired Investigators Guild exists to support these agencies by providing seasoned, expert investigators who can assist with cases that require specialized knowledge and experience. Our goal is simple: to ensure that major investigations, including cold cases, receive the attention and expertise they deserve.
Cold Cases: Bringing Justice and Closure
Across the country, over 250,000 major crimes, including homicides, remain unsolved and classified as cold cases. Tragically, fewer than 18% of law enforcement agencies have a dedicated cold case unit. This leaves countless families without answers and communities without justice. The RIG is committed to addressing this challenge head-on, focusing on cold cases and bringing closure to families who have long awaited justice.
We are especially dedicated to helping communities that have been traditionally underserved, where a disproportionate number of cold cases remain unresolved. To this end, 50% of the cold cases we accept will involve victims from these communities. For us, every case is equally important, and we are resolute in our commitment to leave no stone unturned in our pursuit of justice—regardless of race, religion, culture, or socioeconomic status.
Training the Next Generation of Investigators
As law enforcement agencies continue to face staffing shortages, specialized training for new recruits and detectives is more crucial than ever. The RIG is proud to offer expert-led training programs, taught by some of the most accomplished investigators in the country. These courses—available online, on demand, and in-person—equip detectives with the tools and knowledge necessary to navigate the complexities of major case investigations. By providing critical training, we help strengthen the investigative capabilities of local agencies, ensuring that they can effectively tackle the challenges they face.
Our Commitment to Law Enforcement
Through our active case support, cold case resolution, and specialized training, the RIG is working to rebuild America’s law enforcement infrastructure. We are committed to supporting police departments and sheriff’s offices at no cost to them, relying on donations and grants to fund our operations. As a registered nonprofit, we are able to offer our services at no charge, allowing law enforcement agencies to focus on what matters most—keeping their communities safe.
