The Retired Investigators Guild Launches as a Nonprofit Dedicated to Solving Cold Case Homicides

Feb 6, 2023 - Reno, Nevada – There are more than 225,000 unsolved murders, classified as cold cases and growing sitting in the files of American law enforcement agencies.  Some are being actively worked, but most are simply collecting dust while family members of the victims wait in vain for closure and justice for their loved ones.

The Retired Investigators Guild (RIG) (www.therig.org) has been established to help stem the rising tide of cold cases, particularly in small, rural, and tribal law enforcement agencies where resources are scarce and wide-spread staffing shortages mean few if any investigators available to work cold cases.  In fact, fewer than ten percent of law enforcement agencies even have a cold case unit.  That’s where the RIG will make a difference.

The RIG is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization comprised of the very best retired and former homicide and major case investigators who are dedicated to serving their communities by providing a new set of eyes and nationally recognized expertise on long-unsolved cases.

A unique aspect of the RIG’s mission is its focus on victims from underserved and under-represented communities, which make up a statistically significant percentage of all cold case murders.  The RIG has committed to ensuring that more than half of the cold cases it accepts will involve victims from such communities. Headquartered in Reno, Nevada, the RIG is a virtual organization with investigators located throughout the United States who are available to support partner law enforcement agencies anywhere, anytime they need help.

The RIG is supported through donations and grants from individuals and organizations.
